A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
