In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
