Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the option to question certain rulings from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
